A vote to add new express toll lanes on the Capital Beltway in Virginia was delayed Wednesday.
The plan would extend express lanes from the Springfield interchange through Alexandria and across the Wilson Bridge. Residents say something needs to be done about traffic congestion in the area.
Maryland leaders oppose the project, saying it would create a traffic bottleneck in Oxon Hill, instead.
The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board says the project needs more study before going forward. It’s not clear when the plan will go before the Board again.
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay told News4 Tuesday he hoped the vote would be delayed rather than go against the proposal and be permanently shelved.
“The express lanes project that has been proposed is the only project being worked on that would relieve gridlock in this section of the Beltway,” he said. “It’s the only one right now. And the no build alternative has us in a couple of years with upwards of a one-hour delay on the bridge approach in Maryland and in Virginia.”
