BARTOW, Fla. – During today’s work session meeting, Polk County school board members and the district superintendent were able to gauge the community’s response to their proposed comprehensive rezoning plans for Polk County high schools.
Right now, enrollment at several county high schools is not balanced, causing major overcrowding at some schools.
Only 31 surveys were returned to the board regarding high school rezoning. Responses were mixed from parents and students, both in support and opposition.
Middle and elementary school zone surveys are being developed as the next phase of the rezoning plan continues.
The board said they anticipate more responses from those surveys. They will include more feedback options for those unhappy with rezoning to offer a different solution.
“Well, tell us why you didn’t like those choices, but I think we have to move forward with it based recommended by the committee and what’s recommended by the superintendent because it’s long overdue, it’s drawn out,” said Polk County Board Member Travis Key.
Officials are looking toward their November 16 or possibly December meeting for final approval on zoning options.
They said their ultimate goal is to spread capacity to 85% across all their high schools.
