Did you get this letter? You may be eligible for a tax refund

DENVER (KDVR) — Keep an eye out for mail from the State of Colorado. The Colorado Department of Revenue announced that the state is sending letters to thousands of taxpayers who may be eligible for refunds.

The department said that this year, the state is sending notices to at least 20,000 taxpayers who could be eligible for $8 million in unclaimed refunds.

The notice sent from the state has directions on how to review and file an amended tax return. This includes logging on to Revenue Online with the code in the notice, reviewing the data and filing the amended return. These returns are prefilled using existing data, and the department said it could take as little as 10 minutes online and save thousands of dollars.

After submitting the amended return, the department said eligible taxpayers can expect to receive prior tax credits and withholdings in a few weeks.

“It’s no secret that filing taxes is too costly and complicated, but the state is taking proactive action to ensure Coloradans get every dollar you deserve from your tax returns. Coloradans who receive a notice can submit this prefilled online form in less than 10 minutes, putting extra money back in your pocket,” said Governor Jared Polis.

The department said the notices will be sent through June 30, 2026.

This comes as part of the Earned Income Tax Credit Data Sharing Act of 2024, where the Department of Revenue said it works with other state agencies to save Coloradans money.
