Man dies after opening door of moving CTA Red Line train; service stopped

A man riding the CTA Red Line Tuesday morning was killed after he “forced” open a door and exited while the train was still in motion, Chicago police said, with service on the line temporarily suspended as officials worked to investigate.

According to a 4:50 a.m. alert from the CTA, Red Line service was temporarily stopped between 95th/Dan Ryan and Garfield due to an “unauthorized person on the tracks” at 79th and Dan Ryan. As a result, trains were only operating between Howard and Garfield, the CTA said, with shuttle buses providing connecting service.

“We are working to restore service as quickly as possible,” the CTA said, with service still suspended as of 8:40 a.m. “Allow extra travel time.”

Chicago police later confirmed a man riding the train had forced open the doors while riding the train at West 79th Street, and exited while it was moving. The man struck the third rail and was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A death investigation was underway, police added.
