ELGIN, Ill. (WGN) — Mixed, piped, fried and filled, Churros y Chocolate is cooking up a classic sweet treat at their newest location in Elgin.
That sweet treat is as the restaurant’s name implies, churros. Vince Ortiz founded the confectionery in Algonquin more than six years ago, but for wholesalers.
“A person decided to walk in because she was wondering what we were doing,” Ortiz said. “Plus, the cinnamon and everything smelled good on the street [so], she encouraged us to open a retail [location].”
Since then, they’ve grown and expanded south to neighboring Elgin.
On any given day, customers can try a churro sundae or shake, a fruit and powdered sugar-stuffed churro, or even a churro sandwich.
But at the center of it all, is the original churro. Ortiz said it took years to perfect the recipe behind it before it became the crispy, crunchy, chewy treat it is today at Churros y Chocolate.
“To me personally, it brings memories when I was a little kid. When I had churros, what we like is when you eat something sweet, it lights up your face and you want another one,” Ortiz said. “It’s difficult to make them because any time you work with flour, it involves temperature, time, and the consistency to keep it the same. Every batch has to be the same, and that’s the hardest part.”
