SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego’s largest school district ranked among the top in state English language and math assessments when compared to five large urban school districts in California.
According to the 2025 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Smarter Balanced Assessments, San Diego Unified ranked the highest in English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy. It also placed second highest in Mathematics.
Across all grade levels, middle and high school students showed notable gains in both subjects. Eighth graders’ ELA scores rose 3.8 points from last year while their Math scores improved by 2.8 points, the district stated in a news release.
Meanwhile, 11th grade students improved 2.5 points in ELA and 4.2 points in Math compared to the previous year’s assessments.
Overall, more than 56% of students met or exceeded standards in ELA and just over 45% of students met or exceeded standards in Math, the district said.
“Every percentage point of growth represents students moving closer to meeting grade-level expectations,” said District Superintendent Fabiola Bagula. “Our work is not finished, but these results show that with focus, resources, and collaboration, we can accelerate learning and close opportunity gaps.”
San Diego Unified is one of the largest public school districts in California in terms of enrollment, second only after Los Angeles Unified.
