What to Know
- The government shutdown has entered a second week with no discernible endgame in sight. The Senate today again rejected dueling GOP and Democratic funding proposals, and both parties are exchanging blame with no apparent resolution on the horizon.
- Trump posted on Truth Social this evening that the “first phase” of the peace plan to end the conflict in Gaza had been signed, which includes a plan to pause fighting and release hostages and prisoners.
- Former FBI Director James Comey pleaded not guilty today in federal court to charges of obstructing a congressional proceeding and making a false statement to Congress. The charges were brought after a public campaign by Trump to prosecute Comey. A trial date was set for Jan. 5.
- Trump posted this morning that Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson should “be in jail for failing to protect ICE officers.” His post came as National Guard troops are arriving in the Chicago area and prompted pushback from both officials. “Come and get me,” Pritzker said.
- The White House continues to face heat over a draft memo arguing that furloughed federal workers are not entitled to back pay after the shutdown lifts.
