LAKE MARY, Fla. (WFLA) — One person is dead after a semi hit a Tesla that was stopped in the center lane of I-4 in Lake Mary Monday night, the Florida Highway Patrol announced.
A 2020 Tesla Model 3, driven by a 43-year-old Deltona man, was stopped in the eastbound lanes of I-4 when a 2024 Peterbilt semi-truck approaching the disabled vehicle changed lanes to avoid hitting it.
According to FHP, a 2018 International semi-truck was behind the first semi and veered left, attempting to avoid the Tesla.
The International semi-truck collided with the rear of the Tesla before running off the roadway, hitting a guardrail, and overturning on its left side.
The impact caused the Tesla to run off the roadway and hit the rear of the Peterbilt semi that initially avoided the vehicle, FHP said.
The driver of the Tesla was pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP is working to determine why the Tesla was stopped on I-4.
