Sikeston police officer killed in the line of duty

SIKESTON, Mo. – The Sikeston Department of Public Safety is mourning the death of one of its officers who was killed in the line of duty.

Officer Henry Franklin was shot and killed on the evening of Monday, Oct. 6, while attempting to serve a warrant at a residence in neighboring Mississippi County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Franklin, who was a member of the Sikeston DPS Tactical Team, had responded to a mutual aid call from the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office to locate and arrest Nathan B. Peters, 36, in connection with a homicide that occurred earlier in the day.

The highway patrol said Peters barricaded himself inside the home and shot Officer Franklin just after 7:35 p.m. and continued firing at officers outside.

The MSHP Troop C SWAT Team was requested to assist. At 12:35 a.m. Tuesday, law enforcement entered the home and found Peters dead in the residence from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Franklin, 41, had worked in the Sikeston Department of Public Safety since June 2013 and had previously served in the Army National Guard. He also was the handler for K9 Odin.

“Our department has suffered an unimaginable loss,” Sikeston Department of Public Safety Director James McMillen said.

Franklin was born and raised in Charleston, Missouri. He’s survived by his wife and their four children, along with his mother and sister.

Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow has ordered that flags in Sikeston fly at half-staff through the end of the day of the funeral.
