Former NFL star Mark Sanchez arrested at hospital after Indianapolis stabbing

Former NFL star and current sports broadcaster Mark Sanchez has been arrested at a hospital where he was being treated for stab wounds, according to Indianapolis police.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the arrest at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, saying investigators reviewed footage of the incident showing Sanchez’s involvement in the incident that landed him in the hospital.

“Sanchez was arrested at the hospital for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all which are misdemeanors,” the police department stated.

According to IMPD’s initial report, the incident involved Sanchez and another male adult and resulted in “one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds.”

The police department noted that the incident was likely isolated between the two men, both of whom received medical treatment, and that it was not believed to be a random act of violence.

“Sanchez is still in the hospital and has not been booked into the Adult Detention Center,” added IMPD. “An arrest is merely an accusation, and Sanchez should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.”

FOX Sports confirmed the former Jets quarterback was recovering in the hospital in stable condition as of 10:49 a.m. Saturday.

“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support,” read the organization’s statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”

Details are limited, but ESPN reports Sanchez was stabbed early morning on Saturday. According to TMZ, it happened around 12:30 a.m. in a downtown area.

TMZ said police responded to a call reporting two people had been injured after a stabbing. “We’re told Sanchez was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition,” TMZ reported. No further information was immediately available.

According to ESPN, Sanchez was scheduled to be part of the broadcast crew for Sunday’s game between the Las Vegas Raiders and Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, but said he will no longer work the game.

Sanchez, 38, played eight seasons in the NFL after being selected fifth overall by the New York Jets in the 2009 draft out of the University of Southern California.
