Blue Streaks run past the Wolf Pack for Class AA win

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — For the first time since 2018, the Saratoga Springs football team earned a state ranking next to its name. Last week’s impressive road victory over Shaker propelled the Blue Streaks into the Class AA top-30, and they proved they belong there once again Friday night, powering past Colonie, 28-14, for yet another league win away from home.

No. 28 Saratoga has been powered all season by star running back Ben Coryea, and this game was no different. Coming off a four-touchdown performance against Shaker, the senior tail back followed that up with three scores in the first half against the Wolf Pack defense, lifting the Blue Streaks to a 21-0 lead.

Colonie managed to get one score back before halftime when quarterback Steve Thomas Jr. called his own number for a rushing touchdown.

Trailing 21-7 out of the break, Colonie was looking to strike again and further cut into the deficit. Faced with a four down at the Saratoga 10-yard line, a pass from Thomas Jr. fell incomplete, as the Blue Streaks defense held strong.

The Wolf Pack would get the ball back and again marched right down the field. This time, Thomas Jr. kept it on the ground, and punched in his second score of the day. The junior signal caller led Colonie in rushing with 111 yards.

But it wasn’t enough to top Saratoga’s dominant rushing attack. Coryea went back to work, leading the Blue Streaks down the field. The strong run game set up the play-action, and ‘Toga would find the end zone once more. Robert Morris hit Gavin LaFrance on a swing pass coming off a play-action fake, and LaFrance took it in for a three-yard touchdown. That score pushed the margin back to 14 points and sealed the victory for Saratoga.
