(KRON) — The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) announced significant changes, including the closure of Academy High School and the opening of a new elementary school in Mission Bay next fall.
Academy High School — a hybrid institution combining classroom learning, City College of San Francisco classes, and internships — will close at the end of this school year.
Meanwhile, SFUSD will open Mission Bay Elementary School, funded by a voter-approved bond from 2016, marking the first elementary school in the Mission Bay neighborhood.
In addition to being a money saver, Wallenberg students would have access to this hybrid type of education and Academy students at Wallenberg will have a greater mix of classes, according to SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Maria Su.
Mission Bay Elementary is being constructed using bonds from a 2016 voter-approved measure, with completion expected in January. The school plans to open six classrooms next August, including two pre-K, two transitional kindergarten, and two kindergarten classes.
Dr. Maria Su noted that the additional enrollment at Mission Bay Elementary will cover operational costs, with plans to open more classrooms and grades each year. The top floor of the school will house the Mission Bay Hub, providing science, health, and tech training to high school students.
“We built this school because we knew that this new neighborhood was going to be thriving with lots of people and families,” Su said.
These changes reflect SFUSD’s efforts to optimize resources and expand educational opportunities in growing neighborhoods. The district aims to enhance educational offerings while managing costs effectively.
