BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (NEWS10)– On Wednesday, the town of Bethlehem installed Automated External Defibrillators throughout Elm Avenue Park to increase safety measures. The AED boxes also contain Narcan kits and Stop the Bleed kits.
According to the town, AEDs are usually accessible at indoor locations, but are rarely available in outdoor locations. David DeCancio, a town board member in Bethlehem, said the new project highlights public safety at a new level.
“The Town of Bethlehem is setting a new standard for public safety, making lifesaving tools like AEDs and Narcan accessible beyond the walls of a building, and right where people need them most—in our public spaces,” DeCancio said.

The AED boxes will be placed around Elm Avenue Park in secure boxes that can be opened by calling 911 during an emergency. The AEDs and LIFEPAK CR2 defibrillators have a child mode that makes them safe to use on both children and adults.
Officials said the tools are ideal for recreational fields and summer camp locations, like the park. According to the town, the boxes will be placed in the following locations:
- Large Pavilion
- Warming Area – near basketball courts, playground, outdoor ice skating
- Park Office – near soccer and lacrosse fields
- Line Drive Park – near baseball and softball fields
- Tennis & Pickleball Courts

“Bethlehem’s Elm Ave Park is always busy with visitors enjoying its amazing playground, fresh pickleball courts, and extensive soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and lacrosse fields,” Town Supervisor David VanLuven said. “Thank you to the Albany County Legislature for helping us make our great park facilities even safer.”
The project was fulfilled by a $19,000 grant from the legislature as well as a $4,300 match from the town and $1,000 from the Friends of Bethlehem parks and Recreation.
“Albany County prioritizes investing in parks, public health, and safety,” Joanne Cunningham, Albany County Legislature Chair said. “I am thrilled to join Bethlehem’s leaders in celebrating the installation of these lifesaving emergency boxes that can be the difference between life and death for anyone enjoying Elm Avenue Park. This is a smart investment.”
