A contractor for SANDAG is drilling test bores in more than two dozen locations in and around Del Mar to gather geotechnical data for the proposed rail tunnel.

Data collected from the tests will help SANDAG evaluate the four potential routes for relocating the tracks off of the eroding Del Mar bluffs.

SANDAG said the testing is necessary “to learn more about the underground soil structure” along the routes.

“This work, combined with previous geotechnical studies, will help us evaluate the potential alignments,” the agency said.

The city of Del Mar warned that nearby residents can expect periods of noise and possible traffic delays during the work.
