FESTUS, Mo. — Three people are dead and several others hurt in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 55 in both directions south of Festus on Sunday.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed at least six vehicles were involved in the wreck near the Highway 67 interchange. Investigators said three people died and one additional injury was reported.
Missouri Department of Transportation cameras showing emergency crews at the scene. Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-55 were closed while troopers work to clear the scene. Lanes of traffic have now started to open up.
Highway Patrol officials said traffic is being diverted to U.S. 61. A crash reconstruction team is on the way to assist with the investigation.
No details about the victims or cause of the crash have been released.
