LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In 2024, the Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton football team saw its undefeated season cancelled right before the start of the postseason due to alleged misconduct, stemming from an incident within the team. This season, the new-look Wolverines are back with a new coach and a much younger roster.
Week 4 of the high school football season will offer Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton its biggest test yet, as the Wolverines host Greenwich – the team that went on to win the Section 2, Class title last year – in our 1st and 10 “Game of the Week”.
This year’s squad is primarily inexperienced at the varsity level. Of the 26 players on the roster, 16 are underclassmen, and a handful of players on the team had never played football prior to this season.
It’s a team that first-year head coach, John Irion, had to build from the ground up, opening camp with just 15 players. But as the days went on, more players decided to join the team, and now the Wolverines enter their matchup with the defending champs at 2-0.
Irion is pleased with the growth of the team; something he expects will continue throughout the season.
“It’s getting better,” said Irion. “I think we’re gonna be one of those teams that improves probably or possibly more than some of the other teams as the season goes on.”
The Wolverines will be in for quite the battle on Friday night. Greenwich enters the matchup at 3-0; ranked second in the state for Class D, and returned a good portion of last year’s team that went to the state semifinals. The Wolverines are welcoming the challenge of taking on one of the best team’s Class D has to offer.
“It’s going to be a dog fight for the whole game,” said senior tight end and defensive tackle Liam Foy. “And our coaches know that. They know that; our whole team knows that. I’ve never seen a team like us this locked in this whole week.”
Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton hosts Greenwich on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Lake George Jr./Sr. High School.
