DENVER (KDVR) — A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy spotted a car driving on the shoulder of Interstate 25 while it was bumping into the median, according to a video posted on X from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
On Friday, around 9:35 a.m., a deputy responded to multiple reports of a car driving erratically and running into the median while traveling at 75 mph on I-25 near Castle Pines.
The deputy located the car and attempted to stop it, following the driver southbound until the Greenland Road exit in Larkspur. The deputies were cautious in the pursuit, so they did not endanger the other drivers in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
The dashcam video of the deputy showed a small white car swerving on the interstate between multiple lanes and even hitting the median barrier.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office requested a grappler vehicle so it could stop the vehicle without threatening others nearby. However, the grappler vehicles were not close enough to the area and were unable to respond.
In a moment of need, the sheriff’s office called in a favor from the Colorado State Patrol, which sent one of its grappler vehicles.
“The driver was all over the place and we wanted to make sure he wasn’t going to hit anyone,” said Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly.
The grappler was able to catch up to the car and successfully stopped it with the grappler, reducing the chance of injury for the driver, law enforcement and the others in cars in the surrounding area.
“I think it’s important for community members to see what their tax dollars are going to and see their law enforcement is in fact keeping them safe,” said Weekly.
The driver was taken into custody. The sheriff’s office did not say whether he may face charges or what they would be.
“We appreciate the partnership with the Colorado State Patrol, and this goes to show the usefulness of this technology. It’s also a reminder, if you drive recklessly or try to run from us, we will pursue you and we will catch you,” said Weekly.
The sheriff’s office said the incident underscores how vital a tool like the grappler is, and how interagency coordination can help maintain safety through joint efforts.
