Four Florida schools made it into the top 50 public colleges and universities in the country, and one even held onto its spot in the top 10, according to the latest rankings from U.S. News and World Report.
And South Florida didn’t stay behind, giving one (or two if you count Tampa) group of students reason to celebrate.
Here’s a look at the rankings.
The no. 1 public university in Florida is…
Go Gators!
The University of Florida held onto its spot in the top 10 public universities in the country, where it ranks 7th. This also makes it the top public school in the Sunshine State.
The Seminoles at Florida State University are the next to make the list, ranking 21st among all public universities in the country and 2nd in Florida.
But here’s where South Florida starts to shine.
The University of South Florida in Tampa takes the 3rd spot in the ranking of public universities in the state — and the 43rd spot in the national ranking.
And to close out the schools in the top 50 nationwide, we have none other than Florida International University.
The Panther Pride is earned: FIU ranks 46th among public universities in the country, and 4th in Florida.
What about all universities, public and private?
If we expand the rankings to include all Florida universities, private and public, we see one more familiar name: the University of Miami, which ranks 64th in the country.
Here’s how the other schools we’ve mentioned rank among all universities in the country:
- #30 – University of Florida
- #51 – Florida State University
- #64 – University of Miami
- #88 – University of South Florida
- #97 – Florida International University
OK, that’s Florida. But who took the top spots?
We smell a rivalry, because last year’s top two public universities flipped places.
The top public school in the country is the University of California, Berkeley, the report says, followed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Meanwhile, the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor hung onto 3rd place.
If you count private schools, you’re looking at Princeton University in 1st place, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2nd, and Harvard University in 3rd.
