MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. — A police K-9 unit was hailed as a hero for helping to find a missing senior citizen.
An 87-year-old Island Lake man went missing Thursday in a wooded area. His family called authorities to help in the search.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy John Wisniewski and his specially-trained K9 dog, Kylo, responded to the scene.
“I know when Kylo’s nose is on the ground, that he’s dead on the track. I know that he’s on it,” Wisniewski said.
Kylo lead sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement over heavy brush and woods on the edge of Island Lake.
“When Kylo is close to an actual person, he’ll stand up on his toes and his ears will perk up. He’ll put his nose up in the air and start looking,” Wisniewski said. “When I saw Kylo start doing that, I yelled out the gentleman‘s name and then two seconds later the gentleman yelled back!”
The 87-year-old man was disoriented and dehydrated in the heat but did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.
Four-year-old Kylo and his devoted handler are thrilled with last week’s outcome.
“It’s not just Kylo and I. It’s all of our coworkers together,” Wisniewski said. “We train together, we work together.”
