SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI)– All northbound lanes on the I-5 freeway starting at Mission Bay Drive on I-8 will be closed from Friday, Sept. 26, through Monday, Sept. 29, according to a report from Caltrans.
The closure taking place to conduct roadwork and culvert replacement will begin Friday evening at 9 p.m. and will end Monday morning at 5 a.m., Caltrans says.

Motorists are advised to take SR-163, SR-15 and I-805 as alternate routes to connect onto I-5. Those traveling northbound on I-5 past SR-163 will be detoured to I-8.
According to Caltrans, portable signs will be placed along the routes advising of the closures and suggesting alternate routes.
On-ramps closed during construction:
- The Moore Street on-ramp in Old Town to I-5 North
- Onramps at Camino Del Rio West in the Sport Arena area and Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road, as well as Clairmont Drive
All MTS northbound bus routes from La Jolla to UTC will operate as usual.
According to Caltrans, this is the second of several full freeway closures for the I-5 Asset Management Project.
The project is part of $1.6 billion worth of work in San Diego County to improve safety and infrastructure on I-5, I-805 and SR-78.
