CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A high-speed chase ended in gunfire outside a Laguna Hills In-N-Out early Saturday morning after a homicide suspect evaded police, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Andre Anthony Matijasevic of Rancho Santa Margarita, was wanted for allegedly shooting and killing a woman in Carlsbad on Friday night.
“We were closing down for our night in our apartment and we heard five gunshots going off,” said one neighbor named Stella.
The incident began when Carlsbad Police responded to reports of a shooting in an apartment complex parking lot on Rising Glen Way just before 10 p.m. Friday.
According to Stella, the sound of gunshots was followed by screaming and the sound of a vehicle leaving the scene.
Another local resident, Andy Underwood, described hearing sirens and seeing police secure the area for hours.
Carlsbad authorities used license plate technology to help Orange County officers locate Matijasevic around 1 a.m. Saturday.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that Matijasevic was shot and killed by police after he reportedly opened fire on officers, none of whom were injured.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is overseeing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while the Carlsbad community grapples with the aftermath of the incident.
Carlsbad Police say they believe the homicide is an isolated incident.
