How it Happened: Broncos blow fourth-quarter lead, lose to Chargers on the road

Stick here for live updates and analysis as Denver takes on the Colts at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Live updates

FINAL | Chargers 23, Broncos 20

Another week, another walk-off loss for the Broncos.

After battling back to take the lead on the road on Sunday, the Broncos’ offense stalled in the fourth quarter while Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert shined to lead his team to a comeback 23-20 victory at SoFi Stadium.

Late in the fourth quarter, Herbert evaded heavy pressure from Denver to make an incredible throw to Keenan Allen in the end zone that tied the game. The Broncos couldn’t respond on offense, going three-and-out and giving Los Angeles another opportunity. The Chargers capitalized and nailed a field goal to end the game.

Next up for the Broncos: Back at home to host the Bengals on Monday Night Football in Week 4.

More Broncos coverage

Fourth-quarter updates

Ballgame (5:16 p.m.): Cameron Dicker, the kicker, takes down the Broncos at the final whistle. Just brutal.

Once again, the Broncos had several chances to put this game away, and never did. Some harsh lessons on the road for Denver the last two weeks.

And now the Chargers have a stranglehold on the AFC West. Jim Harbaugh’s mastery of Sean Payton continues. — Schubert

Broncos walked off for second straight week, fall 23-20. I predicted that score. But man, Denver had so many chances to put this away in second half. They fall to 1-2 and three games behind Chargers in AFC West when considering tie-breaker. — Renck

Herbert steps up (5:14 p.m.): Justin Herbert has put on his cape in the fourth quarter. This is what MVPs do. Every throw the Bolts have needed, he’s delivered. Could be another walk-off loss for the Broncos coming up. — Schubert

Third time’s not the charm (5:08 p.m.): Another deep throw from Bo Nix, another throw that’s just out of reach. It hit Courtland Sutton in the fingertips. — Nguyen

The grin on Bo Nix’s face before that throw …

He knew he had something, and he JUST missed.

The Broncos are giving the ball back to Justin Herbert with a chance to win this thing. Nightmare territory. — Schubert

Sutton was wide freaking open, man. Wow. — Gabriel

Touchdown, Chargers (5:01 p.m.): What. A. Play. Justin Herbert, in the face of immense pressure, finds Keenan Allen in the end zone for the touchdown. Broncos 20, Chargers 20 with 2:37 to go. — Nguyen

Justin Herbert with one of the better throws you’ll see all season. And Keenan Allen turns back the clock. We’ve got a tie ballgame at SoFi Stadium. MASSIVE drive coming up for Bo Nix and the Bronccos.

All tied with 2:37 left. — Schubert

Justin Herbert avoids sack by Allen and throws off balance with Bonitto in face to Keenan Allen for one-handed TD. It’s 20-20 with 2:37 left. 7 plays, 76 yards. That was too easy. Penalty hurt. Also, Herbert showed why he’s in the early MVP discussion. — Renck

Just an absolutely insane play by Justin Herbert. — Gabriel

Penalty (4:58 p.m.): BAD flag from Hufanga. Not the sort of mistake you can afford from a veteran leader. — Schubert

Bo knows running (4:55 p.m.): On third-and-13, Bo Nix scrambles for a 12-yard gain. Nearly the first down, but his knee hit the ground just before the line. — Nguyen

Davis Webb going nuts after Nix scramble. But it is just short because knee was down. Man, bad luck on a good play. Defense needs another stand. Feels like I have written that sentence 500 times last nine years. — Renck

Bo Nix nearly pulled a rabbit out of his hat there. Defense gonna have to buck up yet again. — Schubert

Drive (4:53 p.m.): This is the kind of drive that good teams put together. Play keep away and kick FG… And this drive is going nowhere. — Renck

Sacked (4:49 p.m.): John Franklin-Myers and Nik Bonitto closed in on Justin Herbert to force fourth down. Franklin-Myers with the sack. Chargers punt into the end zone. — Nguyen

Nik Bonitto off the edge and John Franklin-Meyers cleans it up. Massive third-down stop for the Broncos defense. Hold onto the ball for a while here, and the Broncos are going to be 2-1 and in first place in the AFC West. — Schubert

Nik Bonitto conjures images of Von Miller with rocket start on snap. Doesn’t get touched as John Franklin-Myers gets sack. Huge play. Chargers punt. — Renck

Field goal, Broncos (4:37 p.m.): Denver couldn’t capitalize in the red zone. Wil Lutz nails a 26-yard field goal to cap off the 10-play, 51-yard drive. Broncos 20, Chargers 13 with 12:21 to go. — Nguyen

Broncos, again, miss an opportunity to go ahead by two possessions. Feels like we’ve seen this before. — Schubert

I am old enough to remember the Broncos failing to put away a good opponent on the road and then losing in stunning fashion. When was that again… — Gabriel

Can Broncos finish? Lead by seven with 12:21 left. — Renck

Penalty (4:36 p.m.): Mr. Franklin, you gotta sell that rub route a little better than that. — Schubert

Fourth-down conversion (4:33 p.m.): Gutsy! Bo Nix connects with Courtland Sutton for a 22-yard catch. — Nguyen

Sean Payton really dialing it up on fourth down. Courtland Sutton both times. And that might be game. — Schubert

Coming up for Krull (4:31 p.m.): Lucas Krull came up with a 9-yard catch after it was deflected. Broncos have fourth-and-1. — Nguyen

So glad we got that virtual measurement. — Schubert

Third-quarter thoughts — Broncos 17, Chargers 13

Luca Evans, beat writer: J.K. Dobbins has 10 carries for 79 yards through three quarters and has as good a shot as anyone to become the first 100-yard single-game rusher in the Sean Payton era.

Parker Gabriel, beat writer: Broncos offense blew three chances of extending a second-half lead last week.

0/1 so far this week and a third-and-10 to begin the fourth quarter. Can they reverse the trend and put the Chargers away?

Troy Renck, sports columnist: Broncos have seven first downs and 17 points. Such odd game that turned on 52-yard pass and 51-yard run. Denver has Chargers wobbling. Can they finish. Broncos are 2-8 in one-score games under Payton the past two years. This is the kind of game that changes that narrative.

Matt Schubert, sports editor: Time to let the Broncos defense win this one. No mistakes. No big gambles. Just let your dudes be dudes.

Third-quarter updates

Return to L.A. (4:27 p.m.): Motivated J.K. Dobbins is not a J.K. Dobbins you want to encounter on the field. — Schubert

Casa Bonitto (4:23 p.m.): Another sack for Nik Bonitto. An 8-yard loss on that play. Four sacks for the Broncos today. — Nguyen

Nik Bonitto with his second sack of the day. He pointed out that the tackle can’t block him. He’s on a heater. — Renck

Big boot (4:21 p.m.): Crawshank Redemption has been really good this season. Another big punt there. — Renck

Three and out for the Broncos. Looking like the defense is gonna have to win this. — Schubert

Field goal, Chargers (4:13 p.m.): Again, Denver’s defense bends but doesn’t breaks. Fourteen plays for 69 yards and the Chargers settle for a 24-yard field goal. Broncos 17, Chargers 13 with 5:35 to go in the third quarter. — Nguyen

Brandon Jones makes a big play in coverage. The Broncos red zone defense continues to come through. — Schubert

Justin Strnad ticks pass. And Pat Surtain II knocks it away. Huge stand to hold Chargers to a field goal. 14 plays, 69 yards in 6:27. But only 3 points. Broncos lead 17-13 with 5:35 left in third. — Renck

Ladd’s game (4:09 p.m.): McConkey has some Edelman/Welker to his game. — Renck

McConkey just burns PSII on a pick play. Chargers are in the red zone. — Schubert

Penalties (4:05 p.m.): Justin Strnad just straight up tackled McConkey in coverage. Bolts moving the ball thanks to penalties.

Make that three penalties for the Broncos defense on this drive. Was Jim Harbaugh in someone’s ear at the break? — Schubert

Broncos’ determined to undermine their momentum with three defensive penalties on this drive. Have to play smarter, more disciplined. Hufanga tripped McConkey. Other two penalties were suspect. — Renck

Field goal, Broncos (3:58 p.m.): Wil Lutz nails a 42-yard field goal. Four plays, 6 yards on that drive. Broncos 17, Chargers 10 with 12:02 to go in the third quarter. — Nguyen

Missed opportunity for the Broncos. They’ll get a field goal out of this turnover. But just like last week, they fail to take complete control of the game with an opportunity served up for them on a silver platter. — Schubert

Almost (3:57 p.m.): Bo Nix nearly connects with Marvin Mims Jr. for a touchdown. Just beyond his reach. — Nguyen

Bo Nix just misses a wide-open Marvin Mims Jr. in the end zone. Needed a split second more time to throw. — Schubert

Broncos ball (3:56 p.m.): Jonah Elliss punches out the ball on kick return coverage. Denver ball. — Nguyen

Broncos special teams … looking special!?!? — Schubert

Touchdown, Broncos (3:51 p.m.): Well, that was fast. Three plays by J.K. Dobbins for 66 yards capped off by a nice 19-yard touchdown. Broncos 14, Chargers 10 with 13:40 to go in the third quarter. — Nguyen

J.K. Dobbins takes control of this game in two plays. What a turnaround for the Broncos. — Schubert

Dobbins scores as he tip toes along the sideline after dump down pass. In a game easier to appreciate than explain. Broncos lead on three-play, 66-yard, 1:20-second drive. It’s 14-10 Broncos.

What was so amazing about that last drive. Dobbins had -4 yards on 4 carries in first half. Had 66 yards on 3 carries on that march. –— Renck

J.K. Dobbins wanted to “go out with a win” this week. He’s jump-started the Broncos into high gear this second half. — Evans

Off and running (3:50 p.m.): The Broncos open with a 41-yard run by J.K. Dobbins. — Nguyen

Broncos J.K. Dobbins begins revenge game with revenge half. First play goes for r1 yards. — Renck

Halftime thoughts — Chargers 10, Broncos 7

Luca Evans, beat writer: And after all that, the Broncos are down 10-7. Sean Payton shifted momentum on one play-call. Broncos have run for 11 yards, Bo Nix is 7/15, and yet Denver’s down three points.

Troy Renck, sports columnist: On fourth-and-2 from 48-yard line, Nix fakes pitch to Dobbins and Sutton is open from moment left line of scrimmage because of formation. It was unbalanced formation with Bolles as the right tackle. Screamed run. Sutton more open than 7-Eleven. It’s 10-7 at the half. And the stats look balanced in a game that was anything but.

At halftime, Payton said it is important that they get the run game going. They have 11 yards on eight attempts. Not likely to win with that imbalance unless get special teams TD or pick six.

Matt Schubert, sports editor: The Broncos put together one offensive drive worth a darn, and only trail by three points thanks to Riley Moss’ heroics and a pass rush that has returned with a vengeance. That’s a small victory in itself. Regroup and make the right adjustments, and this game is right there for the taking with the Broncos getting the ball to start the third quarter.

Second-quarter updates

Momentum change (3:32 p.m.): Jim Harbaugh on the verge of pulling a reverse Payton at SoFi here. — Schubert

Touchdown, Broncos (3:28 p.m.): Payton dialed that one up, man. Hello.

Courtland Sutton running wide open for a 52-yard touchdown. — Gabriel

I take it all back.

It’s a minor miracle this is about to be a three-point game going into the break. — Schubert

Gutsy call. On fourth-and-2 at their own 48, the Broncos went big and it paid off. Bo Nix finds a wide-open Courtland Sutton for a 52-yard touchdown. Chargers 10, Broncos 7 with 38 seconds to go in the half. — Nguyen

Broncos had 42 yards before that drive. They had 52 on play. Sean Payton can drive me crazy with his personnel groupings, but he can dial up some dimes. On fourth-and-2 from 48-yard line, Nix fakes pitch to Dobbins and Sutton is open from moment left line of scrimmage because of formation. Nix to Sutton for 52 yards score. — Renck

Going for it? (3:27 p.m.): I’d think twice about going for it here if I were Sean Payton. — Schubert

First down, Broncos (3:25 p.m.): Three first downs for the Broncos. All three were catches made by Courtland Sutton. — Nguyen

Touchdown, Chargers (3:21 p.m.): Rookie Omarion Hampton runs in untouched for a 3-yard touchdown. Nine plays for 54 yards for the Chargers on that drive. Chargers 10, Broncos 0 with 1:53 left in the half. — Nguyen

Much like they did first half last October in Denver, Chargers mauling Broncos. Have 12 first downs to their 2. Have 168 yards to Broncos’ 42. Missed flea flicker haunting Broncos. — Renck

Huge catch (3:16 p.m.): Justin Herbert finds Quentin Johnston for a big 23-yard gain. Chargers first-and-goal at the 3. — Nguyen

Justin Herbert making magic happen. Broncos are in serious trouble if the Bolts put one in the end zone right here. — Schubert

Justin Herbert shows why he is in early MVP conversation with dime to a leaping Johnston for 23 yards. Called PI on Riley Moss (Well they said Surtain, but looked like he was nowhere near ball) . Ball on 2-yard line. 10-0 lead would seem huge with way Broncos offense is sputter. — Renck

So close (3:04 p.m.): The Broncos nearly had a huge play. A flea-flicker that Bo Nix would turn to a deep throw to Marvin Mims Jr. It hit his hands but was just a smidge too long. Denver punts instead of an easy touchdown. — Nguyen

Sean Payton ALMOST had some witchcraft there.

Handoff to J.K. Dobbins, pitches back to Bo Nix, Nix goes deep to a wide-open Marvin Mims there down right sideline — but misses just too long for Mims.

They had it. — Evans

Nix moved forward in pocket and didn’t set his feet. Ball sailed on him, overthrowing Mims. Just absolute huge miss on a great play call for score. Put X by that in your scorebook at home. Man, that hurts.

Just needed to set his feet and put some air under it. Poor mechanics cost Broncos a TD. — Renck

Another first down (3:02 p.m.): Nix to Sutton again. A nice 19-yard gain on third down. — Nguyen

First first down (3 p.m.): Bo Nix connects with Courtland Sutton for a 13-yard gain. — Nguyen

Interception (2:57 p.m.): Broncos bring Singleton on blitz. And on back of play, Riley Moss tips pass intended for Quentin Johnston that Brandon Jones catches on the deflection. Defense making a statement. Need some — any help — from offense. — Renck

What an incredible play by Riley Moss. If Denver wins this game, put a star next to that. — Schubert

Riley Moss with a tremendous diving tip there. Quentin Johnston probably thought he was about to walk into the end zone. — Gabriel

Chargers rollin’ (2:56 p.m.): Chargers’ play-action game is starting to cook. Hits on this drive from Justin Herbert to Ladd McConkey and to Oronde Gadsen. Broncos need to get their defense off the field. — Evans

Dime (2:54 p.m.): Herbert just delivered a dime to rookie TE and Denver Post Broncos beat draft crush Orande Gadsden out of Syracuse. — Gabriel

First-quarter thoughts — Chargers 3, Broncos 0

Luca Evans, beat writer: Well, that was one of the worst starts imaginable for the Broncos. Penalties. Offensive disorganization. Confusing running-back usage. Screens galore. Sean Payton’s unit has produced 13 net yards on nine plays. The Broncos’ pass-rush is bailing them out (again), but they can’t hold forever against the Chargers.

Parker Gabriel, beat writer: First-quarter musing … in statistical form:

  • 9 plays
  • 13 yards
  • 1.4 per play
  • 0 first downs
  • 1 rushing yard
  • 3 accepted penalties for 33 yards

Troy Renck, sports columnist: In biggest game of season, Broncos offense delivers worst first quarter in recent memory — 13 total yards on nine plays. And group looks completely out of sync. Defense has shown up and shown out with three sacks. But feels like game when Broncos will need a special teams touchdown or pick six to stay in this game.

Matt Schubert, sports editor: As bad as things have been offensively — and they’ve been poor — things could be a lot worse. So, I suppose the Broncos have that going for them.

First-quarter updates

Slow start (2:44 p.m.): Broncos have 13 net yards on their first nine plays. That math won’t work. — Renck

Just a subpar ball from Bo Nix on third down. That ball needs to be on the outside shoulder. — Schubert

And another one (2:40 p.m.): This time, it’s Jonathon Cooper for a 7-yard loss. — Nguyen

Sacked (2:39 p.m.): Nik Bonitto made up for that earlier penalty, sacking Justin Herbert for an 8-yard loss. — Nguyen

Wrong way (2:36 p.m.): Broncos started drive at 39-yard line and ended it at the 38 after hold, no gain and short pass. Two three-and-outs. And worse, offense looks chaotic. Need to simplify things and start to develop an identity. Right now, offense has none. — Renck

Two drives apiece and so far the Broncos have 16 offensive yards and 33 penalty yards. — Gabriel

Broncos drive so far (2:34 p.m.):

  • Negative run play compounded by holding penalty
  • Line change subs lead to late break from the huddle and a timeout burned
  • Another run going nowhere
  • Bo Nix throwaway

— Gabriel

Payton has more line changes than the Avs. And they had to burn time out as new personnel group ran into game. Feels like they should simplify things. — Renck

Offensive woes (2:31 p.m.): The Broncos’ offense is decidedly not humming so far this afternoon. — Gabriel

Colorado prep star sighting (2:28 p.m.): Former Mullen HS standout J.K. Scott with a huge 55-yard punt. Marvin Mims Jr., however, did Mimsy things and returned it 32 yards. Broncos ball at their 39. — Nguyen

Penalty woes (2:27 p.m.): Last year, Broncos had 14 penalties to #Chargers’ 5. And here we go again. Been a forgettable three weeks for Broncos’ special teams.

Justin Strnad struggles in coverage. But man he has carved out role as niche blitzer. — Renck

Meet Talanoa (2:27 p.m.): Talanoa Hufanga arrives at the ball with vigor. — Gabriel

Injury watch (2:26 p.m.): John Franklin-Myers was on the Broncos sideline with his helmet off but just put it back on after a couple snaps. Sean Payton checked on him and Zach Allen did, too.

Something to watch going forward. — Gabriel

Offsides (2:24 p.m.): And an offsides penalty on Nik Bonitto gives the Chargers a first down and the ball back. — Nguyen

Terrible penalty for Denver. Nik Bonitto offsides, lined up in neutral zone on punt, gives Chargers a first down.

Kind of penalties you can’t have in this big of a divisional game. Sean Payton was chirping at Bonitto on the sidelines. — Evans

Sacked (2:22 p.m.): D.J. Jones with another big play, this time sacking Justin Herbert for a 1-yard loss and forcing fourth down. — Nguyen

Three-and-out (2:17 p.m.): A short pass to RJ Harvey, followed by a Harvey run and an incomplete pass to Lucas Krull has the Broncos punting. Chargers will start at their own 20. — Nguyen

Very un-Crawshaw on that punt. — Schubert

A dash of irony there. Looked like Lucas Krull sat against the zone and Bo Nix threw it past him. Of course, the mirror image of a Week 1 play in which Krull didn’t sit. — Evans

Field goal, Chargers (2:12 p.m.): Los Angeles settles for a 32-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker after an eight-play, 55-yard drive. Chargers 3, Broncos 0 with 11:54 to go in the first quarter. — Nguyen

Again, a nice red-zone series by the #Broncos’ defense. Jonah Elliss generates some pressure, Jahdae Barron nice coverage.

But Broncos give up points on opening drive for third straight game. Not something Sean Payton’s been happy with. 3-0 Chargers. — Evans

Jonah Elliss continues to make plays. Hit Herbert as he threw to force 32-yard FG. Chargers take 3-0 lead with 11:54 remaining.

Defense gathered itself after the third down mistake. But defense has allowed points on all three opening drives this season. Gotta get better. — Renck

Weird play there (2:10 p.m.): Justin Herbert finds Quentin Johnston for a first on Pat Surtain II. Surtain II then just stopped, looked like he thought forward progress.

Johnston just pops it for 37, refs never blew whistle dead. — Evans

Huge stop (2:06 p.m.): D.J. Jones stops the Chargers’ first play, stopping the run for a 4-yard loss. — Nguyen

Coin toss (2:04 p.m.): Broncos win the toss and defer. Go-time in the greater Los Angeles area. — Gabriel

Pre-game updates

SoFi Stadium is a modern gem (1:35 p.m.): I do wonder how much the Broncos will take from this in their new stadium. The circular jumbotron seems like a must. They won’t have the canopy, if have a retractable roof. But the Walton-Penner group visited NFL, MLB and European soccer stadiums as they decided on their next move. My guess is there will be some similarities to SoFi. — Renck

Good morning from SoFi Stadium (Noon): It was a grey, cool-ish morning here in L.A. but the sun’s out now — not that the weather has much impact on the happenings inside the building here.

Should be a good one. The Chargers have guys on the field throwing a ball around with baseball gloves. Bo Nix is going through his normal warmup with Beau Lowery and in a couple of hours a key divisional matchup will be underway. — Gabriel

Something haven’t seen before (11:59 a.m.): Three Chargers with baseball gloves throwing around what looks like a superball. It’s Tony Jefferson, Tuli Tuipulotu and Caleb Murphy getting some tosses in on the field. — Renck

Orange-and-blue (11:54 a.m.): Broncos Country will be well-represented here if our walk through the tailgate is any indication. But the Sea of Orange will be less than saw in days of the games in Carson and San Diego. The Chargers are becoming a little bit of a thing with Jim Harbaugh now. And the tickets are insanely expensive. — Renck

Scouting report (11:10 a.m.): Check out how the Broncos match up with the Chargers in Luca Evans’ scouting report.

Game predictions

Parker Gabriel, Broncos beat writer: Chargers 23, Broncos 17

Jim Harbaugh’s got his team off to a terrific start. He oversaw a sweep of Sean Payton’s team a year ago. And he’s got a defense coordinated by Jesse Minter that is flying. They make you dink and dunk, which the Broncos did powerfully for almost a half in December, then forgot to carry on with. A 1-2 start isn’t ideal, but it’s not the end of the world for Denver, either. On the flip side, 2-1 with a road win over the Chargers would look awfully good.

Luca Evans, Broncos beat writer: Chargers 27, Broncos 17

Not going to be very popular here, but the Broncos have a lot of kinks to iron out on the road in sunny Los Angeles. The Bolts have the weaponry around Justin Herbert to attack the gaps in Denver’s secondary, and the defensive playmakers to contain Bo Nix. They just made Geno Smith look like his 2013 Jets rookie-disaster self again. This is an early inflection point for Sean Payton’s squad.

Troy Renck, columnist: Chargers 23, Broncos 19

Styles make fights. And the tale of the tape is not kind to the Broncos. The Chargers make them uncomfortable and impose their will like few teams do. With Jim Harbaugh in his first season, the Chargers swept the Broncos because they dominated time of possession, were more disciplined, took care of the ball, and wore them down on the ground. And now Justin Herbert and his receivers are better. This is a statement game that Denver needed at home.

Sean Keeler, columnist: Chargers 23, Broncos 20

Justin Herbert right now is everything we want Bo Nix to be. And more. Safety Derwin James Jr. is doing his best Steve Atwater. L.A. coach Jim Harbaugh has some kind of Peter DeBoer-like hold over Sean Payton-coached teams (5-1 lifetime). If the Broncos lose this one, Herbert and Harbaugh might have the AFC West locked up before the end of September. Surely, the Chargers have to find a way to Charger this one. Don’t they? (Nah.)

Broncos-Chargers NFL Week 3: Must-reads

Renck: Why Broncos’ Sean Payton vs. Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh is referendum game

The Broncos should not be nuts about the Bolts.

The revelation is as depressing as a leverage penalty. The truth is as sobering as Dre Greenlaw’s sore quadriceps.

Just when we thought the Broncos could win the AFC West with the Chiefs dissolving before our eyes, they must level up against the Chargers. Not this season. Not in January.

Now.

Lose to the Chargers and Denver trails by three games in the division three weeks into the season. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Sunday, which is conveniently part of a larger narrative. Read Troy Renck’s full column.

Broncos RB J.K. Dobbins motivated to show he’s ‘back to being one of those top-end backs’ to Chargers and to NFL

Now 26 years old and the head of a revamped Broncos backfield, though, Dobbins feels he’s a better football player for the pain of the last few years. A better man, too. He smiles with his eyes when he says it.

He was not the rare running back who’s immortal. He is the rare back who’s survived. Read Luca Evans’ story.

Broncos special teams coach Darren Rizzi pushes back on Colts’ description of fateful FG penalty: ‘We know our tendencies’

Darren Rizzi sensed trouble just before the fateful snap against Indianapolis.

The Broncos, though, could not reset.

The closing seconds of Sunday’s walk-off loss to the Colts are well-covered by this point.

The 60-yard Spencer Shrader field goal attempt that went begging short and right. The leverage penalty on Dondrea Tillman that gave Shrader another chance.

The 45-yarder sailing through the uprights and dropping Denver to 1-1 moments after the team thought it had started the season with two wins.

Rizzi on Thursday acknowledged that Tillman erred when he, just before the snap, switched places with interior defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike. Read Parker Gabriel’s story.
