SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The United Domestic Workers union (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) is campaigning across San Diego County to get residents to vote for Proposition 50 in November.
Prop 50, also known as the “Election Rigging Response Act,” is California’s proposed redistricting map in response to Texas’ redistricting efforts. The proposition would see five new congressional districts now have a democratic majority.
The UDW represents more than 220,000 home and family childcare providers in California. Organizers recently endorsed Prop 50 and now plan to launch large-scale mobilization efforts across the state, including San Diego.
“Our hardworking members overwhelmingly support Prop 50 and are coming out en masse to kick out those in Congress who slashed Medicaid and nutrition assistance funding in order to pay for a massive tax giveaway to billionaires,” UDW Executive Director Doug Moore said.
Organizers hope to contact more than 100,000 voters by canvassing, phone banking, utilizing social media and more. On Saturday, dozens of UDW members will kick-off their canvassing campaign in San Diego County.
“I’m supporting Prop 50 to hold congressional members accountable,” Precious Henley, a UDW caregiver, said. “It’s time to elect members of Congress who care about strengthening our communities!”
A recent poll by Emerson College Polling and commissioned by Nexstar Media, parent company of FOX 5 San Diego and KUSI News, states 51% of voters plan to vote yes on redistricting, 34% plan to vote no and 15% are undecided.
“We need champions in Congress to fight for home care and family childcare,” Care provider Cynthia Williams said. “The Republicans in California voted to cut hundreds of millions in funding for Medi-Cal and home care. We deserve better representation in Congress! We can fight back by voting YES on Prop 50.”
