Delaware unveils new license plate in celebration of America's 250th birthday

In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, Delaware officials have unveiled a new license plate that allows people of the First State to show off their pride.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2025, Governor Matt Meyer signed House Bill 250 to bring a new special license plate to the DMV.

“Next year, we’ll celebrate two 250-year milestones: the birth of our nation and Delaware’s place as one of the original 13 states,” said Governor Matt Meyer in a news release. “These anniversaries remind us of the courage and vision that shaped our country, and they challenge us to keep building a stronger future for every family. And in true Delaware fashion, we’re celebrating with a tradition all our own: a special license plate that lets us carry our history and patriotism wherever we go.”

Dick Carter, the Chair of the Delaware Heritage Commission, says the plate celebrates both of Delaware’s 1776 independence movements.

“June 15th was the day the Delaware assembly passed legislation not only breaking us away from Great Britain but also breaking us away from the colony of Pennsylvania,” Carter told NBC10.

The new license plates include red and white fireworks and a navy blue background. It’s the same color blue that was used for the uniform jackets of the Delawareans who fought in the Continental Army during the Revolution.

Applications for the new plate will open next week, and it’ll cost drivers $50, with $15 of that going to the DMV to cover the production costs. The other $35 goes to the DE 250 organization, which will help plan all the fun and festivities for next year.
