A clerk at a convenience store in Philadelphia’s Frankford section has been hospitalized after, officials said, he was shot in the face during a robbery that happened on Sunday.
According to police, officers responded to the 2000 block of Bridge Street in Frankford at about 11:10 p.m. on Sunday after a report of a shooting at the Bridge Market convenience store.
Here, officials said, responding officers found a 27-year-old man, who was working at the store, after he had been shot in the face.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where, police said, he was listed in stable condition.
“We just know there’s an unknown male dressed in all black clothing, entered, pulled out that firearm, shot one time, and then after he was able to pick up as much money as he could, he actually fled,” said Capt. Tyrell McCoy, of the Philadelphia Police Department.
After, the shooting, police said, the gunman opened a rear door of the market and other people — police did not immediately say how many — stormed into the shop and stole money.
Lamar Smith, a witness to the incident, told NBC10 that he saw two guys running out of the store after someone shot the store clerk.
Smith claims he was detained for hours, questioned about running in afterwards to steal money. He was eventually let go. NBC10’s cameras rolled as officers started talking to him last night at the scene.
“When I got in there and seen the blood, that’s what made me want to leave, cause it’s just too much now,” Smith said. “Like right now, I don’t know how to feel. Don’t know if I want to be angry, or I want to be sad.”
Pablo Rodriguez, a clerk at a store close to where the incident took place, said he worries for his safety and works with similar security measures, including standing behind bullet-proof glass.
“It’s just going crazy Philadelphia, with all the stuff that is happening right now. It makes no sense,” he said.
The clerk injured remains in the hospital on Monday afternoon and police are still looking for the shooter in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
