Carter Lake searched for missing kayaker: Larimer County Sheriff's Office

DENVER (KDVR) — Officials began searching for a missing kayaker at Carter Lake on Thursday after receiving reports of a man in the water in distress.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said that the call was received just after 5 p.m. on Thursday. The caller said they saw a man in the water near a kayak who appeared to be in distress and who was not wearing a personal floatation device.

On Friday evening, the agency said that a dead man, presumed to be the missing kayaker, was recovered from Carter Lake. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will be in charge of releasing the man’s identity, as well as the cause and manner of death.

An off-duty Loveland Fire Rescue Authority firefighter was in the area, according to the sheriff’s office, and began the search for the man. Several agencies responded to Carter Lake and were able to locate the kayak, but not the man.

Search efforts were ongoing Thursday evening with the assistance of Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team.

Officials are closing the area of Carter Lake south of Dam 1 while recovery efforts are ongoing. The community has been asked to avoid the area to allow crews to work.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Larimer County Sheriff’s Office investigator Ryan Gebhardt at 970-498-5586.
