New Jersey family charged after murdering, dismembering man

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A New Jersey man arrested at the Rainbow Bridge and his family are facing multiple charges after allegedly murdering and dismembering a man in June, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

A man, identified as 41-year-old Everton Thomas, was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Monday at the Rainbow Bridge crossing heading into the United States. CBP officers found he had an active arrest warrant out of Camden, N.J., for first-degree homicide with a gun.

On June 14, 48-year-old Harold Miller Jr. of Deptford, N.J., was reported missing. An investigation revealed surveillance video and cell phone data showing Miller entering a residence on Baird Boulevard in Camden just before 11:30 a.m. on June 12.

Shortly after, the footage captured sound of what appeared to be one gunshot, officials said. Miller was not seen leaving the residence, but the footage reportedly showed Thomas moving Miller’s vehicle and parking it in Pennsauken.

Officials said Thomas’s wife, 41-year-old Sherrie Parker, and son, 22-year-old Deshawn Thomas, bought a chainsaw, containers, garbage bags and cleaning supplies.

Surveillance video also allegedly showed Everton and Deshawn making multiple trips to dumpsters and putting containers and garbage bags into a vehicle before leaving the city.

After a search of Everton’s house on June 20, he was allegedly found in possession of a loaded firearm, which had one round in the chamber and nine rounds in a magazine. Officials also reportedly found suspected bloodstains inside of his house, which matched Miller’s DNA.

Everton then fled to Canada. He remains in New York pending extradition to New Jersey and faces the following charges:

  • first-degree murder
  • second-degree desecration of human remains
  • fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence

Parker and Deshawn were charged with second-degree desecration of human remains and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence. They were taken into custody on Monday and remain at the Camden County Correctional Facility.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Jake Siegfried at (856) 225-5086 and Detective Andrew Mogck at (609) 519-8588.
