(WPRI/Nexstar) — Officials at the University of Massachusetts Boston have given the all-clear after a shooting was reported on campus Thursday evening.
“Police have reported the incident on campus all clear,” the university said in an alert issued around 5:15 p.m. ET. “There is no ongoing threat to the community.”
At 4:15 p.m. ET, Massachusetts State Police said troopers were responding to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Thursday for an “unconfirmed report” of a shooting on campus.
School officials first said a “police incident” happened near the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The alert was then updated to a “safety threat” near a residence hall in UMass’ East Building, followed by another alert 15 minutes later about a “police incident in/near Campus Center.”
Students were being asked to avoid the area. Shortly before 5 p.m. ET, UMass confirmed classes and activities for Thursday night have been canceled, noting a police investigation was “ongoing.”
No additional details were immediately available.
Police told local outlet WBTS that there had not been any confirmation of gunfire or armed individuals on campus. Video from WCVB showed officers on the campus, entering and exiting buildings.
Nearly a week ago, students at the UMass Lowell campus were ordered to shelter in place after reports of a potentially armed person at the school. Police later recovered an airsoft replica gun and identified the suspect as a teenager. It is still unclear whether any charges have been filed.
UMass is located just a few miles from Harvard University, Boston University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There were no active security alerts from any of those schools as of 5 p.m. ET.
Meanwhile on Thursday, several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were placed on lockdowns amid reports of potential threats. Impacted schools included Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia; Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia; Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida; Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, and Alabama State University in Montgomery.
As of Thursday afternoon, many of the schools had lifted their lockdowns. Officials at all of the above campuses canceled classes and activities on Thursday, while Hampton University and Southern University and A&M College extended cancellations through Friday.
