SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced plans to accelerate the city’s recovery by transforming downtown into a vibrant 24/7 neighborhood.
At a news conference in Union Square on Tuesday, Lurie highlighted the progress made over the past eight months and outlined his vision for revitalizing downtown as an economic hub.
“I’m incredibly proud of our progress, but I am not satisfied,” said Lurie, emphasizing the need for continued efforts.
The Downtown Development Corporation has already raised $40 million to support the revitalization efforts. This funding will be used to create new public spaces on Powell Street, Fourth Street, and Embarcadero Plaza, as well as establish a new park in the East Cut area.
Mayor Lurie stated that the goal is not just to return downtown to its pre-pandemic state but to build something better.
“This is not about getting downtown back to where we were before the pandemic. It’s not about that we are committed to building something better downtown than has ever been before,” he said.
The initiative, known as the “Heart of the City Executive Directive,” aims to make downtown a place where people can live, work, play, and learn, attracting both locals and visitors from around the world.
With these plans, San Francisco aims to create a more dynamic and inviting downtown, leveraging significant investments and community collaboration to achieve long-term growth and vitality.
