(KRON) — A new 2026 Tesla Model Y plowed into a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer who had his vehicle’s emergency lights activated for a traffic break on Interstate-280 in Palo Alto Monday afternoon, investigators said.
The CHP officer had stopped traffic to remove an electric leaf blower that was creating a road hazard in I-280’s southbound lanes near Page Mill Road.
A driver in a Tesla “failed to yield to the officer and crashed into him. The officer was ejected from his motorcycle. The officer sustained major, non-life-threatening injuries and has been transported to a local hospital for treatment,” CHP officials wrote.
The Tesla driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
CHP Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team officers are working to determine if the Tesla’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems were activated at any time during the crash.
Three lanes of I-280 southbound, south of Alpine Road, were closed for several hours to facilitate the crash investigation.
