The annual Breakthrough T1D Walk is approaching on November 2, 2025, and the “hype” has already begun.
On Saturday, the national nonprofit’s local Breakthrough T1D chapter hosted its HYPE Party.
HYPE stands for “How You Prepare & Engage,” and it’s meant to help participants in the walk, new and veteran T1D walkers, coordinate and support their walk teams.
The HYPE Party incentivizes the walkers to reach out to their neighbors, friends, colleagues, co-workers and start fundraising.
Breakthrough T1D funding funds research for the latest technology and therapy management tools for type 1 diabetics and research for a cure.
FOX 5 and KUSI Anchor Danica McAdam emceed the HYPE Party and will be co-emceeing the Breakthrough T1D Walk in November.
At the HYPE Party, she introduced her Breakthrough T1D Walk co-emcee, FOX 5 Evening News Anchor, Andrew Luria. Both McAdam and Luria have type 1 diabetes, and so do their mothers.
McAdam’s mother, Beverley Lawrence, passed away in 2018. She had T1D for 57 years before her death from a sudden heart attack. It was her dream for there to be a cure for type 1 diabetes in her daughter’s lifetime.
More than 1.6 million people have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which is not the same as type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that prevents the pancreas from producing insulin, which is needed to break down and regulate sugar from food in your bloodstream.
Without insulin in the body, people cannot live and must rely on insulin injections or wearing an insulin pump 24/7 and a continuous blood glucose monitor to help manage and control their blood sugars.
Breakthrough T1D Walk Chair, Samantha Ecks Kearney, spoke at the HYPE Party and visited the KUSI studio Saturday evening to discuss the excitement building up to this year’s Breakthrough T1D Walk.
Kearney also has T1D. She was diagnosed at 11 years old at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. This year will be her 15th walk.
“… The HYPE Party is all about bringing these families together, and how to increase fundraising every year, coming together as a community and making sure no one feels alone with type 1 diabetes…” Kearney said.

The walk is on November 2 at 8:30 a.m. at NTC Liberty Station.
