Construction worker injured, rescued by firefighters in Boston’s South End

A construction worker was lifted out of a building’s third floor window on Tuesday after being injured on the job.

The man was lowered on a ladder truck in a rescue basket by Boston firefighters where emergency crews put him onto a stretcher and took him to a hospital.

“He tried to speak but when you get hurt you just speak very slow,” Alvaro Largaespada said, who recorded the rescue. “He tried to say something to the people who helped him. His face was tight and neck so he doesn’t move.”

The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. as crews were working to convert an old building into condos on Albany Street in the South End.

“There was stacked scaffolding up there,” Deputy Chief Martin McCormack said, with Boston fire. “It must of shifted and hit him in the head and he may have lost consciousness.”

The contractor told 7NEWS the worker was lifting framing that used is used on scaffolding and fell inside the building.

“The problem is because he injured his head, we had to get him on a back board which excluded the stairwell in the building because they are temporary,” McCormack said.

Building inspectors and members of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration showed up to check out the construction site. Meanwhile, the worker was alert when he was taken from the scene and the contractors say he is on concussion protocol.

“You don’t want to see people get hurt or end up in this situation,” Largaespada said. “We work so hard to support our families.”
