4 taken to ECMC after fire on Delaware Avenue

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Four people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out on Delaware Avenue on Saturday, according to a city spokesperson.

Those at ECMC included a person with a broken leg, a pregnant person, and two people with respiratory problems.

The three-alarm fire broke out at an apartment building at 2439 Delaware Avenue Saturday afternoon around 2:20 p.m. Multiple residents were assisted in getting out of the building, including 15 evaluated on scene for various injuries.

In a statement, Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon said nearly 80 firefighters responded to the scene.

“Their dedication and heroism exemplify the very best of public service,” he said. “I’m grateful that no firefighters sustained serious injuries while working under such dangerous conditions.”

Buffalo Fire Division Chief Daniel Bossi said the damage to the structure is “probably” around $1.5 million to $2 million with another $500,000 to the contents. Responding firefighters had to use around three tanks of oxygen, he said.

The fire is currently under control while Delaware remains closed to traffic in both directions from Hertel Avenue to Tacoma Avenue.

An investigation remains ongoing. Check back for updates.
