Crews were working overnight in Carneys Point Township early Sunday after, officials said, a wrong way crash along the New Jersey Turnpike left four people dead.
According to police, at about 1 a.m., the crash occurred along the New Jersey Turnpike headed southbound, south of Exit 1, in Carneys Point Township, when a Dodge pickup truck, driven by Christopher Neff, 41, of Westminster, Colorado, was headed northbound in the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike.
At some point, officials said, Neff’s truck collided with a Mazda SUV, being driven by Yaakov Kilberg, 19, of Lakewood, New Jersey, that was headed southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike.
The collision pushed Kilberg’s vehicle into the path of a Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by a 29-year-old man from Nova Scotia, officials said.
Police said the Mazda was struck by the tractor-trailer in a collision that killed Kilberg and three passengers in the vehicle — Aharon Lebovits and Shlomo Cohen, both 18 and both from Lakewood, NJ, as well as Chaim Grossman, 18, of Fallsburg, New York.
Neff, police said, suffered serious injuries in the crash and the driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.
Due to the crash, all lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike through that area were closed for several hours early Sunday.
