Three Philadelphia correctional officers and their former supervisor were charged after an inmate was allegedly beaten to the point that he needed emergency surgery while naked, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
The incident allegedly occurred on Oct. 6, 2020, after an inmate was taken into a holding room for apparently wearing the wrong color jumpsuit, prosecutors say.
The officers took the inmate from the holding room to his cell, where they had him strip naked and then punched, kicked and assaulted the inmate multiple times, knocking him to the ground, prosecutors allege.
The inmate suffered injuries to his face, ribs and scrotum, and also needed emergency surgery, prosecutors said.
The indictment also alleges that the four charged “conspired to falsify records, with the intent to impede, obstruct, and influence the investigation and proper administration of a matter within the jurisdiction of the FBI.”
According to prosecutors, the three officers exaggerated the aggressiveness of the inmate and downplayed the alleged beating as much as necessary.
The three officers charged have been identified as Jahaan Andrews, 34, Oneil Murray, 31 and Mumin Hart, 43, prosecutors said. They all worked at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility.
The former supervisor has been identified as Georgia Malloy, 58, a former lieutenant with the Philadelphia Department of Prisons.
All four face conspiracy charges, and the three officers all face two counts of deprivation of rights under color of rule of law and two counts of falsification of records, prosecutors said.
Malloy also faces two counts of falsification of records, prosecutors said.
Andrew also faces an additional charge of making false statements to the FBI.
If convicted, all four men face decades in prison.
