2 men from Miami area killed in apparent lightning strike in central Florida

Two men from the Miami area were killed in an apparent lightning strike in central Florida, authorities said.

Authorities were searching for the men on Wednesday after they’d gone hunting and hadn’t returned, Highlands County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and deputies found their car before locating their bodies on a levee next to a canal, officials said.

The bodies of their two hunting dogs were also found.

Investigators said it appears they died from a lightning strike sometime on Monday evening. A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

The men, ages 38 and 31, were from the Miami area. Their names haven’t been released.

“Our area gets more lightning than just about anywhere else in the country, especially in the summer. If you can hear thunder, that means lightning is close enough to strike, even if the sky doesn’t look too bad yet,” Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman said in a statement. “It is essential to pay attention and plan ahead when storms approach.”
