2 arrested after murder-for-hire plot connected to suburban shooting: Police

Two people were arrested in a murder-for-hire plot after a north suburban Beach Park man was shot earlier this week, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, when a gunshot victim arrived at Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. Detectives determined the victim, a 46-year-old man, was shot while inside his car, which parked outside his home along North Sheridan Road near Kings Way Drive in Beach Park.

The victim was warming up his vehicle before going to work, police said.

Sheriff’s detectives identified a suspect after obtaining the license plate of a vehicle captured on surveillance video driving slowly in the area, authorities said. The suspect, who was identified as Cristian N. Ruval-Cavatorres, 28, of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, was taken into custody by police there during a traffic stop, sheriff’s officials stated. Ruval-Cavatorres was driving a different vehicle when he was pulled over.

The 28-year-old spoke with Lake County sheriff’s detectives, who determined he was responsible for the shooting and obtained evidence he was hired to shoot and kill the victim, authorities said. Investigators served a search warrant and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting and the phone he likely used to communicate with the person who hired him, sheriff’s officials stated.

Detectives arrested the person accused of hiring Ruval-Cavatorres on Thursday afternoon along Park Avenue near 16th Street in North Chicago. That person’s name hadn’t been released as of Saturday morning, as charges hadn’t been filed.

Ruval-Cavatorres was charged with attempt first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
