TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Community members gathered at 30 sites throughout Hillsborough County Saturday morning for the 20th Annual Hillsborough River and Coastal Cleanup.
The trash-collecting event, sponsored by Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, aims to reduce the litter along our coastlines, improve water quality and help marine life.
“We want to ensure our community stays the way it is for years to come… and this is a huge part of that. We need to take care of our water,” said Kristina Moreta, with Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful.
Over 1,000 volunteers took part, removing hundreds of pounds of garbage from the coastlines, with some even taking to the water to assist.
“I love being a part of this. It’s fun, and we can help our environment. It’s a win-win,” said Madison Avery, a volunteer.
All garbage collected is tracked and reported to the Ocean Conservancy, including the amount of each item found. The information is then shared locally and globally to create awareness of the environmental impacts of litter.
